BioSciences

BioSciences and Healthcare is a clear strength for Northeast Ohio, largely driven by the engines of The Cleveland Clinic, University Hospitals, Case Western Reserve University, Summa Health, and the broad medical industry presence of more than 450 companies in Northeast Ohio today. The Cleveland Clinic is consistently rated as a top five hospital in the U.S. and number one in cardiac care by U.S. News and World Repot. Case Western Reserve’s biomedical engineering department is rated as one of the top five in the U.S. as well. Northeast Ohio is building on this tremendous strength and track record by vying to be one of the nation’s pre-eminent centers for biomedical technology.

Leading the charge for Northeast Ohio in BioSciences is a close TechLift partner, BioEnterprise. This unique organization, formed in 2002, has created, recruited, and accelerated more than 60 BioScience companies and has helped these companies attract more than $515 million in new funding. They have also coordinated over 160 technology transfer deals with industry partners.

JumpStart has done its part to fund and support BioSciences companies, with investments in eight biosciences companies, including AnalizaDx, Synapse Biomedical and CardioInsight.

The state of Ohio has played a key role in developing Northeast Ohio’s BioSciences prominence. Third Frontier Investments in neurostimulation, stem cells and regenerative medicine, medical imaging, GI colon cancer detection, macular degeneration, tissue engineering, atrial fibrillation, nano-medicine and others have helped establish Northeast Ohio a research center and has fueled opportunities for future entrepreneurial enterprises.

In addition to research and clinical institutions, Northeast Ohio is home to over 450 BioScience companies, including large players like Philips Medical, Steris Corporation, Invacare, OneSource, MemberHealth and Athersys. Additionally, smaller companies are driving growth in BioSciences as well, such as Spine Matrix, AccelRx, Cleveland Medical Devices, AxioMed, and Thekan Spice to name a few.

TechLift’s Role

Even with the strong and growing medical industry, research base and BioSciences entrepreneurial support network in Northeast Ohio, the opportunity is so big and the small company growth is so prevalent that more support is needed to enable the region to take full advantage of this sector. TechLift will work closely with BioEnterprise to bring nascent companies forward, as well as assist companies in biosciences technology niches that BioEnterprise cannot fully support at this time.
