Northeast Ohio has a unique set of strengths in five specific areas of high technology, which we describe as Northeast Ohio’s Technology Signature:
Some of these strengths have arisen from Northeast Ohio’s manufacturing, industrial and innovation heritage. The tire industry began and grew in Akron; the steel industry drove Youngstown, Canton, and Cleveland. Northeast Ohio has long led the U.S. in paints, coatings and lubrication. We lead the world in polymers and metals and are extremely strong in all advanced materials. Northeast Ohio’s strengths in electronics are in the area of instruments and controls, driven by our expertise in manufacturing and automating production processes.
Other strengths have been driven by Northeast Ohio’s institutions. Innovations at the Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals, as well as Case’s top rated biomedical engineering program have provided a backbone for a burgeoning biosciences industry in Northeast Ohio. Similarly, research at NASA Glenn Research Center has driven Northeast Ohio’s expertise in power and propulsion aspects of the energy space.
Still other strengths come from Northeast Ohio’s recognition for our need to move forward beyond our original roots, yet maintain our culture of innovation with new technologies. This has resulted in a growing software, IT and internet sector, with many innovative companies, both large and small. Northeast Ohio has become a center for new energy solutions for our nation, including one of the top fuel cell clusters in the U.S., and strong programs in wind and photovoltaics.
